New KBBC Dinghy Section Membership
Dear sailors,
Following the success of the Summer Sunday Sailing capped off with the KBBC junior sailing camp it is clear that there is a lot of interest to get out on the water and further hone those skills, or for newcomers to learn the basics and start building confidence and competence to be able to sail solo in Panaga’s gorgeous conditions. The KBBC dinghy section has therefore decided to continue a program each Sunday starting 6th September until the NE Monsoon season (kicks in mid-October) as follows:
0900-1100: Parents and kids sailing.
This is for parents and kids who are keen to learn, or for those who can already sail and would like to take their child or mum or dad out. For novices this will be on Topaz’s of which we have 6 in operation and will be on a first come first served basis. The more experienced can use a laser. There will be 2-3 experienced sailors around to help instruct with the hope that over time individuals become independent on the water. Minimum age is 8 years old and swimming is a mandatory skill. The time slot is chosen since generally conditions at that time of day vary from little to mild onshore wind. There will always be a rescue boat or jetski (or both) available to help out on the water.
1300-1600: advanced and competition sailing
This slot is generally when the winds have shifted to their normal onshore pattern, typically 5-12 knots and ideal for the more advanced sailor and/or kids who have completed the sailing camp. You will be responsible for rigging up your own boat, taking it onto the beach and returning it again, derigging and washing her down. Sailing can be in Topaz’s, Lasers or the Hobiecat catamaran (of which we have 4). Idea would be to start rigging up at 1300 and get out on the water to get some practice in before an informal race (start 1500) around a triangular course. Of course, those not interested in racing can simply sail and enjoy. Rescue boat and jetski will be available to assist.
In order to fund the above with regard spare parts etc, we have set a monthly fee to be charged at B$20 per family. In return for this you will be able to use the boats as often as you would like. You can register to join the KBBC dinghy section through the online registration form here. Anyone not registered as KBBC dinghy member will be charged B$20 per sail.
Lastly, we will endeavor to organize another sailing camp during October holidays for those kids that missed out last time. We can then also gauge interest from adults and see what we can do in parallel.
On behalf of KBBC sailors,
Gijs Holstege
