PGC Captain's Note - Competitions, Course Updates & Club Etiquette

Good day to All our Members.

This year has not followed the weather pattern of 2024 and an extensive dry period has not thus far been seen. I hope that the occasional shower of rain will continue as it helps our greens survive.

We have held a committee meeting this week and wish to share with you a few topics.

Interclub Competitions
PGC is back on the golfing map!! An interclub men's event was held with Pantai Menteri Golf Club and a Ladies Interclub with Kelab Golf Miri has also taken place—both very successful events. My thanks and appreciation to everyone involved from Shop staff to Groundsmen, and especially to Ladies Captain, Elaine, and our Competition Secretary, Stephen. It was fantastic to see so many people out there playing and we hope this is a marker for future events. PGC also managed to win both competitions too, which was fabulous.

Other Competitions – The Club Championship is close to finalising. Well done and thank you to all who have taken part. There is also work commencing on a doubles team match play event. Please keep an eye out for news of this. It is likely to be a 9-hole format, providing greater accessibility. USA GIN Handicaps will be used, so please ensure your handicaps are up to date and reflect your true ability. Please be warned that ridiculously low net figures at competitions are likely to be adjusted in future.

ETIQUETTE
Etiquette on the golf course remains a core value expected of all members and extends beyond the course to the driving range and the shop.

  1. Shop Staff
Staff supporting PGC in running the shop are to be treated with respect. “Please” and “Thank you” are always appreciated. Demands are not to be made—requests can be considered.

  2. Golf Carts
Golf carts are to be returned to the shop area upon completing the round. The team is waiting for the return of the cart—they are not your personal valet.

  3. Number of People in Flight
Flights of up to 4 players only are permitted.

  4. Bunkers
It still appears that bunker rakes are not working. If you play out of a bunker don’t be LAZY - RAKE IT!

  5. Range Balls
If you are found using range balls on the course, you will be sanctioned and banned for two weeks.

  6. Driving Range
Do not hit long clubs such as driver, 3W, 5W, and long irons where there may be a chance the ball strays onto Hole #1 fairway when people are playing that hole.

Course Conditions – Please bear with us while work is undertaken to remove some of the alien grasses that are present on several fairways. Unfortunately, this cannot be achieved without some level of disruption. The areas affected are classed as GUR and should be treated accordingly.

Irrigation – Experimental watering options will be trialed over the coming weeks, so you may see sprinklers operating occasionally.

Trees – There will be ongoing work to remove dead trees and those obstructing play. We appreciate your patience and consideration while this is being carried out.

Golf Cart Tracks – Work will begin to build new tracks at the following locations: from #18 green to #10 tee box, #9 tee box through to the Golf Shop, #8 green to the rear of the driving range, #3 tee box around the back of #2 green to #8 tee box path, and the #17 bridge from Black/Blue tee box through to the #17 fairway. Bridge repairs will also be made beyond the #7 tee box. This work supports golf cart usage and course preservation.

PGC Committee – We are pleased to announce that the Committee Secretary role has been filled as of 18th June. Please join me in welcoming Nick Boey to the committee.

– Rob
